Quinn, a former Special Needs teacher, discovered a unique calling that would bring joy to many. His journey began with crafting cat furniture, but it took an inspiring turn when his son faced challenges in the NICU. To cope, Quinn started crafting baby toys, which eventually led to the birth of Kustom Kitties Canada (KKC). Choosing a name posed an interesting challenge, as Quinn wanted to avoid any unintended associations. Thus, Kustom Kitties Canada was born, ensuring a distinctive identity.
KKC offers a diverse range of handcrafted items, from rattles and toy cars to beds, mud kitchens, and even accessible pirate ships. Quinn’s commitment to accessibility is evident, and he gladly takes on custom requests. Beyond crafting, Quinn hosts engaging workshops for those eager to unleash their creativity. There are workshops for all age groups. For kids, building toy cameras is a popular option. For adults, it’s building baby gyms. Regardless of the workshop, giggles and silliness reign supreme. Quinn has his eye on a future “build your own bed” workshop.
Quinn’s passion extends beyond crafting; he actively collaborates with local businesses and donates to organizations such as Excalipurr Cat Café, Groovy Mama, Regina Cat Rescue, and Inspiring Young Minds. The NICU holds a special place in his heart, with regular contributions to brighten the days of little ones.
Sourcing materials locally is a priority for Kustom Kitties Canada, emphasizing a commitment to community support and sustainability. Every KKC creation comes with a lifetime warranty, a testament to Quinn’s dedication to sustainability. Even toys not of his making receive free repairs, embodying his belief that no toy should end up in a landfill.
The joy of seeing happy kids is the ultimate reward for Quinn. However, the business’s unpredictable nature and the burden of paperwork present challenges, creating a balancing act between peaks of busyness and periods of quiet. Among the heartening tales is a shipment to Wisconsin that brought smiles to a young boy’s face. A child with autism, who had not smiled for months, found solace and joy in KKC’s toy cars, creating a profound impact that transcends craftsmanship.
With aspirations for a dedicated commercial space and an upcoming website, Quinn envisions expanding Kustom Kitties Canada. His goal includes hiring more hands to join the craft, promoting growth and efficiency.
Quinn’s advice echoes his own journey: find a niche, be kind, and remain friendly. His approach includes offering discounted rates to schools and daycares, reflecting a passion for accessible and inclusive education. Groovy Mama, Inspiring Young Minds, and Excalipurr Cat Café hold special places in Quinn’s heart among his favourite local businesses.
In the heart of Kustom Kitties Canada beats the rhythm of compassion, creativity, and community, crafting not just toys but moments of joy that linger for a lifetime.
Huge thank you to Quinn for taking the time out of his busy schedule to meet with me.
