Show Review - Wolf Willow w/ The Red Hot Hayseeds & Gil & Wil

Having followed the band since their inception in 2014, I’ve witnessed their journey through numerous member changes. Originally, they embraced a theatrical element that has since mostly disappeared over the years. However, each of the twelve band members donning unique personas and backstories – they even had their own set of trading cards. Wolf Willow’s imaginative universe revolves around the fictional town of Dartson, Saskatchewan, nestled in the RM of Slippery Butte.

I must admit I missed a portion of The Red Hot Hayseeds’ set due to a captivating trivia night at Excalipurr Cat Café. However, from what I caught, their performance was delightful. Hailing from Calgary, they served as the perfect opening act for Wolf Willow, skillfully blending their own original compositions with covers.

Gil & Wil, a duo from Saskatoon, took the stage next. I had the privilege of enjoying their music at Swamp Fest previously, and I was thrilled to see them again. Though their set seemed all too brief, I held out hope that they might join forces with Wolf Willow for a few collaborative tunes which they did.

Finally, the moment we had all been waiting for arrived: Wolf Willow’s performance. As always, they delivered an electrifying set that had the entire audience on their feet, dancing to the beat. The night was filled with powerful melodies, soulful lyrics, and a palpable sense of camaraderie that only a band as vibrant as Wolf Willow could create.

As the final notes of their last song resonated in the venue, the crowd erupted into a thunderous ovation. The energy in the room was infectious, leaving an indelible mark on everyone in attendance. Wolf Willow’s performance that night was yet another chapter in their musical journey, leaving us eagerly anticipating what the future holds for this beloved local band.
