Show Review - Kris & Jim Alvarez

I can’t pinpoint the exact moment when Kris Alvarez entered my life, but it feels like she’s always been a constant presence since I started attending shows in Regina. At some point, we were formally introduced. Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of attending a number of Kris’ captivating variety shows, the likes of which included the unforgettable “Burnt Sienna.” And now, with her new production, “Burnt Sienna Boulevard”, I’m eagerly anticipating the chance to experience her creative magic once again.

What makes Kris Alvarez’s shows even more special is the involvement of her father, Jim, who happens to be a talented guitarist. His skillful strumming and harmonious contributions add an extra layer of enchantment to the performances. So, when I heard that Kris and Jim Alvarez were scheduled to grace the stage at the Regina Public Library as part of the “Music On The Mezzanine” series, I knew I couldn’t miss it for the world.

I initially expected the show to be filled with covers of well-loved classics, and while I was certainly looking forward to that, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the duo had much more to offer. It turns out that Jim has a knack for songwriting, and together, they treated the audience to a delightful array of beautifully crafted and emotionally resonant original songs. The intimacy of their performance allowed us to bask in the raw, unfiltered emotion woven into each note and lyric.

Among the memorable moments of the evening, they decided to sprinkle in a few covers, including a rendition of “The Boxer” by Simon & Garfunkel. It’s no secret that “The Boxer” holds a special place in my heart, and witnessing Kris and Jim Alvarez bring it to life was an absolute thrill. I couldn’t contain my excitement as they performed this beloved classic.

What struck me most about their performance was the genuine and laid-back atmosphere they created. Kris and Jim weren’t afraid to inject humor into the evening, playfully joking about how the songs often explore heavy, even melancholic themes, yet are juxtaposed with wonderfully uplifting melodies. This contrast made the experience all the more enjoyable.

As I sat there, immersed in their music, I couldn’t help but hope that Kris and Jim Alvarez might consider recording some of their original songs. The thought of having their heartfelt and poignant compositions at my fingertips was tantalizing. But, for now, the absence of official recordings only fuels my desire to catch more of their live shows.

In the end, the night spent with Kris and Jim Alvarez was an evening of enchanting melodies, heartfelt lyrics, and unforgettable moments. I left the Regina Public Library with a heart full of gratitude for their music and a deep sense of anticipation for their future performances and creations.
