A few weeks before the show, I received a Facebook message from Uncle John (Guliak), urging me to a
ttend the upcoming event. Checking my calendar, I noticed that I had a prior commitment to attend Yoga With Cats at Excalipurr Cat Cafe, but I was determined to make it work.
I’ve been a fan of Amy Nelson’s work for quite some time. My first exposure to her music was on the radio show Boots & Saddle (may it rest in peace). Her tunes caught my ear, and her music continued to pop up on my radar over the years.
The show opened with Andy Biesel, accompanied by Ian Cameron on pedal steel. The last time I saw Andy perform a solo set was when he opened for Kacy & Clayton back in December 2014 at Creative City Centre. It wasn’t the happiest time for me, and I needed some convincing to stay. Fast forward about nine years, and things have improved significantly for me. This time, I could fully enjoy Andy’s set as he played a mix of covers and songs from his repertoire with Wolf Willow. I secretly hoped Andy would sing a song from his Slim City Pickers days, but it didn’t happen. It was a delightful experience to witness Andy’s solo performance, and I hope to see more of it in the future.
While I was already familiar with Amy’s work, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from her live performance. Amy and her band delivered an extraordinary show that left me amazed. It seemed as if the venue itself was barely standing by the time she finished. Amy’s music is infused with a remarkable amount of energy, and she had the crowd begging for an encore when she wrapped up her set.
