In a world filled with inspiring stories of compassion and dedication, there’s one that shines as a beacon of hope for our furry friends. Meet Chelsey Legendre, a remarkable individual whose love for animals led her on a journey to create a haven for cats in need. Her heartwarming tale began when her mother-in-law co-owned the Roca Coffee House, where Chelsey worked and eventually became a manager. Chelsey’s love for animals was a lifelong passion, instilled in her by her parents’ love of animals. Surprisingly, she grew up with dogs. It wasn’t until after she got married that she welcomed a cat into her life. Her desire to make a meaningful contribution to the rescue community was fueled by her admiration for cat cafes she followed on social media. And so, the concept of Excalipurr Cat Cafe was born.
The name “Excalipurr” bears a poignant story behind it, inspired by a kitten named Arthur. Chelsey and her husband rescued Arthur from a property just outside of Regina, but sadly, he couldn’t overcome his sickness. In his memory, Chelsey and her husband chose the name “Excalipurr” as a tribute to Arthur, symbolizing the enduring love they had for him.
The start of Excalipurr Cat Cafe was marked by serendipity when a cat named Giles unexpectedly appeared the night before Chelsey signed the lease. Giles had jumped the fence and cried to be let in, a sign they took as a clear indication that the space was destined to become a cat cafe. Giles has since found a loving home with a close friend of the cafe and is living a happy life in Manitoba.
Excalipurr Cat Cafe initially worked with Regina Cat Rescue until early 2021, and then transitioned to collaborating with SOS Prairie Rescue, Scraps – Moose Jaw, and A+ Animal Rescue, despite the unfortunate closure of the latter. The cafe maintains strict criteria for the cats they house, including spaying or neutering, up-to-date vaccinations, and considerations for health, age, and temperament. One of the cafe’s initiatives is the socialization of semi-feral cats, aiming to help these timid felines become more comfortable around people.
Excalipurr Cat Cafe isn’t just a space for cats; it’s a vibrant community hub. The cat room hosts an array of events, from yoga and trivia nights to pet first aid classes, fundraisers, informational sessions, and craft-making. The cafe’s delicious treats, including cookies, cakes, and cupcakes, are lovingly baked by Chelsey herself, adding a delightful culinary experience to the mix.
Chelsey’s favourite events at the cafe are the foster information nights. Though all the events are fun and it’s great to see how the cats interact with the people during the events. The cafe serves as a unique space, housing up to 23 foster cats that visitors can interact with freely, rather than seeing them confined in cages. It’s also an invaluable information hub for all things related to cats. Over its nearly six-year journey, Excalipurr Cat Cafe has welcomed a diverse array of visitors, each finding solace and joy within its walls. Some even joke that it’s the “cheapest therapy in town.”
While Chelsey holds dreams of expanding her efforts to include a feral cat sanctuary, she is content with the cafe’s current operations, knowing she’s making a real difference in the lives of countless cats.
In the near future, Excalipurr Cat Cafe will be on the lookout for more dedicated cat room volunteers, reflecting the growing impact and love surrounding this wonderful initiative.
The most heartwarming moments for Chelsey are witnessing cats finding their forever homes and semi-feral cats gradually coming out of their shells. But there are tough moments too, hearing stories of cats who have been mistreated or abandoned and the pain of losing a beloved feline friend.
Maintaining the space’s cleanliness and educating visitors on proper cat interaction can be a challenge, but Chelsey’s passion for the cause drives her to overcome any obstacle.
Excalipurr Cat Cafe also supports local businesses and artists, with many of the items available for sale crafted by local artisans, including the cafe’s weekend staff member, Lyrrah. They receive essential food supplies from House of Paws and collaborate with One Heart Training for pet first aid classes. Purrsuasion Cat Behavioural Training hosts craft nights and some of the information sessions.
In a world driven by passion, Chelsey emphasizes that the love for animals is at the core of her work, rather than becoming rich and famous. She believes that true fulfillment comes from making a positive impact on the lives of these cats.
In the spirit of supporting local businesses, Chelsey suggests trying out Odd Burger, a fantastic vegan restaurant. Other establishments like Metro Pet Market and House of Paws also share her love for animals. For pet first aid needs, One Heart Training is a valuable resource. Purrsuasion Cat Behavioural is also a valuable local resource. Shameless plug: Look for a blog post about Purrsuation in the coming weeks.
Excalipurr Cat Cafe is not just a place; it’s a testament to the boundless love and dedication of Chelsey and the entire community that rallies behind her. It stands as a symbol of hope for cats in need and a reminder that, with a little love and determination, we can make the world a better place for our furry companions. Visit Excalipurr Cat Cafe, where dreams are coming true, one cat at a time.
Huge thank you to Chelsey for taking the time to sit with me.
