Cats & Trivia

For those unfamiliar with it, Excalipurr Cat Cafe is located in Regina, Saskatchewan. They opened  in December of 2017 and are now just nine adoptions away from reaching the remarkable milestone of 500 adoptions (as of the time of writing this). Initially, Excalipurr Cat Cafe partnered with Regina Cat Rescue but later transitioned to a two-rescue system, collaborating with SOS Prairie Rescue and SCRAPS – Moose Jaw. On average, they accommodate around twenty cats for visitors to interact with. For a fee of $7, you can enjoy a 45-minute session with these adorable felines. Additionally, Excalipurr Cat Cafe frequently organizes special events in the cat room, including activities like yoga, educational sessions, craft nights, and trivia. On September 15th, I had the pleasure of attending an 80’s Trivia night.

I arrived approximately twenty minutes before the event’s start time. After checking in, I treated myself to a Skor frappuccino. Once I received my order, I made my way into the cat room. As more attendees arrived, I took on the role of ensuring the cats didn’t sneak out. Given my experience volunteering in the cat room on weekends, this task was quite familiar to me. Additionally, I warmly greeted individuals as they entered the cat room.

Before long, it was time to form teams for trivia. I teamed up with four other volunteers, although they are on the frontlines of animal rescue than I am. Together, we coined our team name as the “Miami Mice.” As the evening progressed, we did our utmost to respond correctly to the questions posed. The “buzzers” for this trivia night were teaser sticks adorned with bells and ribbons, which the cats occasionally found irresistible. Despite some distractions caused by playful feline participants, we persevered in our quest to answer the questions correctly. Amongst our team, I was the sole member born in the late 80s, which meant I didn’t know as much, but I did know the answers to some of the music questions. Although our team didn’t clinch victory, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

I find immense pleasure in attending events at Excalipurr Cat Cafe, especially when I can share the experience with fellow volunteers. These moments offer a precious opportunity to momentarily forget the demands of the outside world and simply have fun. If you have a fondness for cats and haven’t yet had the chance to attend an event at Excalipurr Cat Cafe, I highly recommend keeping an eye on their social media channels for announcements of upcoming events.
