Show Review - Zachary Lucky & Richard Inman

September 28, 2023

The show had originally been scheduled for The Artesian but was double-booked with another event, leading to its relocation to the Unitarian Centre. I had the pleasure of seeing Zachary Lucky perform once before, and while I believe I’ve seen Richard Inman sit in with the Alley Dawgs, this would mark my first experience attending one of his shows.

The evening held special significance for me, as it marked the official three-year anniversary of me calling Regina home. I couldn’t have imagined a more fitting way to celebrate this milestone than by enjoying the music of two of my favorite Canadian singer-songwriters in such a beautiful venue.

Richard and Zachary took the stage, playfully deciding who would begin with a coin toss, with Richard ultimately leading the way. Prior to the first song, Zachary light-heartedly commented on how delighted he was that we had chosen this show over Bonnie Raitt’s. Though the room wasn’t packed, it was filled with enough people to create an intimate atmosphere.

As Richard began his first song, the audience listened attentively and respectfully, although the sound of someone opening a can momentarily broke the silence. After the initial song, Zachary humorously observed the peculiarity of enjoying beer in a church setting. Richard remarked on how unusual it felt to perform for such a quiet crowd, given that their previous shows had taken place in bar rooms.

Throughout the evening, Zachary and Richard took turns playing songs and sharing the stories behind their compositions. I had the chance to request Zachary to perform his song “Woke Up,” which he graciously did. Another highlight of the night was their haunting rendition of Townes Van Zandt’s “Rex’s Blues.” They seamlessly delivered their entire performance without taking a break, aside from a brief intermission when Richard excused himself to use the restroom. The entire evening had the warm and inviting ambiance of sitting in someone’s living room, listening to captivating stories and beautiful songs.

This experience turned out to be the perfect way to commemorate my three years in Regina. It was undeniably one of the most outstanding shows I’ve attended in a long time, and I eagerly look forward to seeing Zachary and Richard perform again when they return to Regina in the future.

Here is a highlight reel.
