One thing I take pride in myself is my love of local and little known bands. Soil & Grass is no exception. Soil & Grass are a four-piece blue grass band comprising of Nick Day on guitar and vocals, Karley Parovsky on fiddle, Quinn Legare on mandolin and vocals, and Brent Gelsinger on upright bass. Quinn couldn’t make it so Saskatoon’s Ryan Shotton sat in.
They play classic old timey bluegrass and country music songs. If you know me, you’ll know that Soil & Grass are right up my alley. For an hour and a half, they played a wide collection of well known songs like “Cash On The Barrelhead”, “Rollin’ In My Sweet Baby’s Arms”, “Sweet Carolina” along with many others. In addition, they played a few not well known songs that I’ve since added to my liked songs on Spotify. For an hour and a half, I danced in my seat and sang along. Sometimes it’s just good therapy to attend shows you can sing along to without any shame.
I don’t remember how this started, but everytime I see Soil & Grass play, I get so excited when they play “Wayfering Stranger”. It’s always been one of my favourite songs and I never tire of hearing it. After they didn’t play it during the first set, I jokingly told one of the band members that I’m still waiting for them to play it. Thankfully, they did during the second set, even dedicated it to me.
If you like bluegrass and old timey country music, I recommend checking out Soil & Grass. They are easily one of my favourite local bands and I always make sure to see them when they play.
As always, here is a highlight reel of their show https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMjhoQUYs/
