In 2013, my determination was fixed on visiting Toronto. In the years leading up to this, I had been engaged in email exchanges and closely following musicians from Toronto, including Cowboy Junkies, John Borra, The Beauties, Samantha Martin, and a few others. Despite hearing claims about a music scene in Regina from those around me, I refused to acknowledge it. However, fate had other plans for me. Somehow, I found myself convinced to attend the Regina Folk Festival in 2013, even going so far as to purchase a weekend pass. Throughout the festival, I was accompanied by my friend Judy, as we both navigated the world of folk music for the very first time.
My boss had to make a trip to the city to take her mother, so I got a lift and was dropped off at The Victoria Square Mall, where Judy was waiting for me. This period marked a significant transition for me. My roommate of five years had chosen to relocate to Preeceville to be closer to her family, leaving me to move into my own apartment. Little did I realize then that this decision to attend the Regina Folk Festival would profoundly change the course of my life.
During the course of that weekend, I had the opportunity to witness Rah Rah perform. Although Uncle John had recommended them to me several times prior, I had consistently brushed off the suggestion. However, on Saturday night, Rah Rah took the mainstage, and by the end of their performance, I found myself drawn to the merchandise tent, purchasing their albums.
Upon my return home to Melville after the festival, I settled into my new apartment with a strong desire for rest. In the weeks and months that followed, I gradually came to realize that those who had spoken of Regina’s vibrant music scene were indeed correct.
This year holds a special significance for me. A decade has passed since my inaugural attendance at the Regina Folk Festival, marking a milestone in my life’s journey. The impact of that year remains with me as I celebrate with even greater enthusiasm, given that this marks my first attendance at the festival as a resident of Regina.
Stay tuned for another blog post next week, where I’ll delve into the specifics of my experiences at the Regina Folk Festival. In the meantime, expect to see shorter updates from me throughout the weekend.
