This weekend marks my inaugural visit to Swamp Fest, a captivating music and arts extravaganza hosted on Willow Island, nestled within the serene confines of Wascana Park. Remarkably, this venture will also mark my maiden voyage to Willow Island.
Anticipation courses through me as I eagerly await performances by three bands that hold a special place in my heart: The Beautiful Band, The Marmalads, and Wolf Willow. These bands boast musicians with whom I’ve shared a musical journey spanning nearly a decade.
Previously, my encounters with The Beautiful Band typically featured Christopher Sleightholm & The Beautiful Band or Marshall Burns & The Beautiful Band. Intriguingly, this time around, they’re billed as The Beautiful Band, suggesting a mixture of Chris and Marshall’s songs.
Wolf Willow, a local favorite of mine, boasts a sprawling lineup of musicians, although perhaps not quite reaching the epic count of a hundred – I confess, I may be slightly exaggerating, but their ensemble is substantial, with roughly twenty members. Their performances transport me to the golden era of Western sing-along tunes, reminiscent of classic country music variety shows.
The Marmalads embarked on their musical journey as a fill-in act during the Cathedral Village Arts Festival in 2022. Since then, they’ve graced various local festivals with their instrumental renditions of vintage surf melodies, inviting rhythmic exploration on the dance floor.
Notably, all three bands share a collection of musicians, with minor variations. Most of these talented individuals were among the first I encountered when I first delved into Regina’s vibrant music scene. As for the rest of the festival’s performers, I remain unacquainted and excited to uncover fresh musical gems this weekend. Swamp Fest’s commitment to showcasing lesser-known acts, spanning local and national talent, is truly commendable – an initiative I wish more festivals would embrace.
Rumours have been circulating about the presence of a mysterious entity known as the Toxic Algae Blob (T.A.B.) roaming Willow Island. I ponder whether T.A.B. will grace us with its presence this weekend. My trusty camera will be poised and ready to document any potential sightings. Though T.A.B. may seem dangerous, I’ve heard whispers that T.A.B. is a rather friendly creature
Throughout the weekend, I’ll be chronicling my adventures on my social media platforms and TikTok, ensuring you don’t miss a beat of my first Swamp Fest experience. Early next week there will be a new post about my overall experience at Swamp Fest. The links for my social media pages are on the home page.
